WoW MMO Gaming Mouse AP MFC Error

First off, sorry for the lack of updates on the blog in the last couple of weeks. We’ve been overly busy with promoting the new releases, visiting events and working hard on making sure that you will be able to check reviews of the recently released products ASAP.

To the point of this post, however:

We are aware of a recent issue with retrieving character information from the WoW Armory in the WoW MMO Gaming Mouse software.

This has occurred due to recent updates made to the Armory website. It may result in the WoW MMO Gaming Mouse software crash and the inability to link new characters to the software. You may have received an “AP MFC” error, which is a clear indicator of this problem.

You should still be able to use your already linked characters; however, you may experience issues when linking new characters to the mouse profiles. Note that it does not affect the mouse functionality in any way - the armory link is only a visual link to a game character, so you can keep using the mouse profile, including key bindings, macros and other settings as intended.

This issue is being addressed as swiftly as possible.Make sure to check back here on the blog as we post updates. :-)

    Hi casper,

I got a wow gaming mouse back in march and I’m having some problems with it.

1st the “metal” on the surface seems to be flaking off.

2nd the rubberized coating next to the thumb hat has started to wear down.

These I can live with but now the smaller top thumb button has stopped working.

I am really disappointed in the quality of this mouse.

Is this typical of all steel series products?
    I hope not.

Also I just noticed that with patch 3.2.2 there is an option to detect the WoW MMO Gaming mouse. What does turning this feature on do?

    Please elaborate on this.

There’s a way around it, from extensive debugging on my end.

It turns out the MFC error is because the picture cannot be downloaded properly from the website.

I exported a previous profile to XML, changed the name, and then copied the picture over. In my case, in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\SteelSeries\Conf, I copied Lightbringer_Aurahoof.gif to Lightbringer_Skelehoof.gif

This allowed me to create and use a new profile sucessfully. The error is with the picture download. Otherwise, the driver works fine.

    Good luck everyone.

I jusat submitted a support request. I bought Warcraft mouse yesterday. I noticed the new check button in the wow interface. The reason i bought the warcraft mouse was because i wanted more buttons to custom keybing to single keys primarily. But the reason i bought the mosue yesterday, was because after reinstall all of wow and Vista 64 on my Alienware ALX–my existing Sidewinder mouse thumb buttons were not working. Something must have changed in the update. My sidewinder thumb buttons worked fine previously. Now binding those thumb buttons don’t take–SO I bought the WOW MOUSE AND i HAVE same problem with the thumb buttons 9 and 8 and the 4-way button.

I had tried al custom settings and at one point they were working but then the settings stopped working.

Please help me figure this out. I want this mouse to work. Fo course i get the AP MFC error but that is not my major concern at the moment.

    thanks

I’m a little worried that such a minor bug would be causing such problems. Not only that but there is little error checking in the application. I tried to open the XML file to add my own character profile and it crashed with the same AP MFC error. Sure, I must of entered an invalid type in one of the fields, but come on. Error handling please.

Also I’ve had this problem for over a month. Surely you guys could just throw in a bit of error handling, fix the profiles then update the application?

I’m having the same AP MFC error ever since the 3.2 patch. What I don’t understand is why the programmers that make addons can be more prepared for a patch than steel series? Most addons are free and yet they manage to update their software to interact with the armory as soon as blizzard releases a new patch. So, Casper, are you the only developer steel series has? Is there no one dedicated to keeping software for this product updated for customers? Without the profile management feature, I might as well use a regular mouse that doesn’t cost nearly $100. Please fix this so we don’t feel like we have wasted our money.

Yeah I used to have that problem where some buttons wouldn’t work, but somehow I fixed this by switching profiles, then switching back.

After 3 days I bought this mouse the metalic cover started to come off on me too. I reported this and the peron I was speaking to said this has never been reported before. They shipped me a brand-new one and it does the same thing, and it sounds like a lot of people have the same thing.

I didn’tt bother to ask for yet another mouse, cause I figured Steelseries just didn’t even bother to test this before they released it.

The idea of a mouse with this many buttons is awesome, I need this for PvP. I paid 100 dollars for this and I’m dissapointed. I was going to throw this in the trash and buy another mouse, but there’s no other mouse that has this many buttons on the web as far as I looked.
After Steelseries is done what with they’re doing now, they really need to focus on making software that works, and by all means fix the faulty button problem everyone else has.

I am having the same problems as everyone above, the error loading profiles, as well as the buttons not working.
This mouse preformed FLAWLESSLY for the first month or so that I was extremely impressed. Then of course the updates took their toll. I understand that fixing the problems take time, and a great big thank you goes out to Jay above for his advice on how to fix the problem. As soon as I get one of my smarter friends to translate what you said for me, I will work on re-doing my profiles to include the pictures, for now, like many of you, I eagerly await the crew at SteelSeries to come up with a solution to the problem.

Okay not too happy about purchasing two of these mouse and than go and read this.. Oh crap.. So mine is still in box unopened. However my boyfriend set his up or shall I say tried.. I fear his issues are same as those other comments. Right out of the box not working. I was totally excited to try it out as I havne;t been able to play for months due to carpal tunnel syn from my job. So thinking this mouse would solve a issue so I could actually play with one hand and be decent. Oh joy. I sure as hell hope Steel gets this issue resolved.. I see last posting was a month ago and its hard to get new customers when your not helping the ones you already have.. Get on the ball and address the issue.

Seeing as how the last post was Oct 19th, 2009, figured I should post this. Everyone go to Steelseries and download the new software. When i did it, it uninstalled, and i click again to reinstall. All of my characters faces are now looking back up at me. You’ll notice the new software was created on the 10th.

I have used my wow mouse since they were released, with no major problem, until now. I waited to upgrade to Windows 7 until I saw you had drivers that supported it, and went ahead and installed Win7 64bit. After that, I installed the updated drivers (v106) and… my mouse isn’t working. The first time I installed it, I had to start the program manually, and then imported one of my profiles.

I got an error message but the mouse worked ok (Other than not showing it’s usual icon in the task bar)

After shutting down for the night and restarting my computer the next morning, the mouse is not working.

Currently, I have to uninstall my mouse software before every computer shutdown, and reinstall/reimport after every startup, to be able to use the extra buttons.

Is this a problem with windows 7, or the fact that I’m using a 64 bit operating system? And are there any plans to improve Win7 support at this time?

    Hi

I have the same problem as Joseph. (Currently, I have to uninstall my mouse software before every computer shutdown, and reinstall/reimport after every startup, to be able to use the extra buttons.) i hope you can find the problem and let us know

I think i found the solution to people how has problem under windows7 64bit.. it worked for me so i hope it would work for you guys also.. In the dir where you installed the driver for the mouse the is a dir called driver64 goto it and right click on the file called DPinst and chose “Run as administrator” when finish you have to restart your computer and now the mouse should work in wow with your own setup.. did for me :)

I’ve owned this mouse since last spring, and only now is the metal starting to rub/flake off. While it’s unfortunate it’s not out of line with other gaming mice (e.g. Logitech) with equivalent wear.

More problematic is that pushing a year after initial release there is still now way to assign either specific ingame commands (using a text macro does NOT count) nor more assignable “Windows mouse buttons”. This makes the mouse of limited use. For example, I want to assign targetting order (marking with skulls and X’s) to the top small mouse buttons on either side of the wheel, but I have to use Windows mouse function 4 and 5 (the last two free ones) to do so, even though targeting is a WoW-supported function like “toggle walk/run” or “mount/unmout”.

The idea of this mouse is sound, but the implimentation needs some support, especially given the price. Honestly, I would go out and buy another one now if these issues were solved.

Yikes, ok this is a new problem.

I’ve had the update for a few weeks now, and it’s worked fine, however there’s an even worse problem at hand I’d like fixed….now.

To start, the mouse’s macros wont work anymore. I can change the profile but only the default functions of the mouse work. (All the buttons have thier default macros instead of my custom ones.) The illumination isn’t responding either, it’s stuck at a light blue color.

    But wait, it gets worse.

I can’t even uninstall the software. It freezes when it’s about to ask me if I want to save the custom files. I even try to delete the files manually, but deleting some of the files is restricted, and trying the uninstall feature gives the same results.

I’m literaly stuck. I can’t do anything now unless I want to play with the default buttons and the ever-lasting blue color.

Yet again I’ll have to contact support, and ask me what the heck I do if I can’t even delete the files manually.

    Whew, close call.

For whatever reason why this fixes my above problem, you can turn off the computer, and when you come back it’s better again.

Maybe you guys can try that if you haven’t yet already.

I have a similar crash, but not from linking new characters. Once I exported my profiles, removed the whole software, reinstalled, and imported profiles. After this, I can never switch to those profiles in the software, without it crashing. The mouse and bindings work, but I can never change it now wo it crashing. New chars I have created I can open software with (ie. right clicking tray, selecting old profile, then open software will fail and crash). How can I specifically get rid of select profiles? It seems everything is bogged down in one large XML file). This still fails in 1.06

    Anyone else have this issue?
For no reason the mouse click stops working, both of them, right and left click. I can still mouse the pointer but i can’t click anywhere.
The only way i found to fix it, is to open the task manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del then close it. Then it works for awhile.
    I use Windows7 64bit.
In the device manager the description of the driver installed for the mouse is:
    HID-Compliant mouse
    Driver Prodiver: Microsoft
    Driver Date: 2006

So it looks like the driver won’t install…But the software works fine and everything works….
Anyone have suggestions I could try?

So I got this mouse because I figured I could make a macro to do a couple of actions with one click. But does not seem to work, when I make the Macro in the Custom Macro opt. and try it in the game it flashes it on one line and nothing happening. Can anyone give me an example of what one should look like or what I may be doing wrong? I’m a Rogue though I guess when it comes to Macros it really does not matter.

IM stunned,,,,seriously, this mouse has crashed wow on multiple occasions for me and the set up is a pain. The new feature that is supposed to let you click a mouse button in the wow key bindings interface is broken as all get out. If im doing something wrong please let me know. But i am soooooo pissed right now. My sidewinder years old is so much easier for just the easiest of functions.

I bought the mouse and it was completely faulty and did not work at all. I returned it and the replacement works on my pc with vista but although i have downloaded the latest softwear it will not work properly on my laptop which has windows 7. I cannot change the colours and the buttons will only work on the default settings and will not changeto any other setting, My profile works ok but this is the only thing that does. All in all a lot of money for a mouse that will not work as described

Okey … I have been using the WOW mouse for almost a year now.
First of all I had 2 “sticky buttons” , which I solved. But then after a couple of weeks the “fake metal surface” flake of. That how ever I can live with even tho its kinda annoying.
The worst thing about this mouse is that , Im getting bluescreens becuz of it. It says “Application HID MFC has stopped working” and after like 2 mins I get a bluescreen.. I have been having nerdrage attacks all since. -.-
The point is I paid what .. 99 bucks for it , yea? And for what?? A mouse that is glowing and makes my comp crash.. Im begging u guys at Steelseries to make some kinda of software (that shit that u guys call a software , must be written by a tard, kina like this angry words) :P.
Otherwise , love the mouse but I wont accept that its acting like this. So Im thinking of going bk to the place I Bought it and request a new one. And just for fun , Im gonna yell and tell them whata piece of junk this really is.
Improve the quallity.. I know Steelseries can make for-ever-gaming-gear , so Im gonna think u guys was slacking with making this software.
But plz update the software so that I can use the mouse without having bluescreens every day.. GO GO GO SLACKERS x’) hehe

I have been using this mouse for over a year now. I run Windows Vista

It worked fine up until about a month ago.

The smaller of the thumb buttons on the left side has ceased to function.

The color no longer changes (I’m stuck with a weird purple color).

I have had to toy with binding in game and on the software, but I’ve always been able to get most (all, until lately) of my buttons working eventually. On the software, I simply set each extra button to a set of action buttons that I don’t use in the game. From there it’s a just a matter of setting your in-game keybinds to those extra buttons. This process took a bit of trial and error to set up originally, but it has worked fine until recently.

Now my mouse randomly stops working in a couple different ways.
    1) No movement and No buttons. (temporarily fixable by un/replugging)
    2) Movement works, No buttons work. This occurs in-game, and is temporarily fixable by minimizing the game screen or pressing ctrl-alt-del followed by a quick Esc. This happens the most often and is very frustrating.

I should also mention that the metallic surface is flaking off. Oh well, it adds character.

I feel I should also say that I absolutely love this mouse. Having had an extra 8 buttons at my disposal for the last year has been amazing. I know there are more than 8 extra buttons, but the 4way thumb button simply isn’t practical for much besides vanity items. I would love to see an improved version of this product, and here are my ideas of some:
-Lower Price- even $60 is expensive for a mouse.
-Less Flash- it’s cool, but I don’t NEED my mouse to flash different colors, and if losing that feature took some $$ off the price tag it would be a good trade.
-The Feel (of the button-press)- Every button on this beast should click with the speed and responsiveness of the main right and left clicks. Some of the buttons just feel weak and springy. Ideally there would be no ‘play’ in the extra buttons (if you gently rested your finger on a button and tried to move your finger around slightly, the button would not move at all). *I think the feel of the mouse in my hand is great, its just the buttons/clicks I would improve.

I would love to get a reply from this feedback.

Love the mouse except i am also getting the same HID MFC error and then the bluescreen of death. Wondering why a $100 mouse is capable of making my alienware computer become nothing more than avery expensive paper weight. Please make an updated software for this as it truly is a wonderful mouse all things considered.
