    i got an error message during the firmware update, saying that the update was not succesfull and that i should try again. The mouse however stopped responding, after a reboot it was back alive, but now it thinks that it has the 1.4.2 firmware, so it wont allow me to try and update again…

    with the 1.4.2 version of the software i cant go into any profiles, its at max speed all the time :S

    Right I forgot about that.

    I installed the 1.4.2 driver and firmware through my laptop and got the same error. But it showed Firmware Version 1.4.2 on the mouse display and it still worked, so I immediately plugged it into my Linux PC to check if they really fixed the Linux issues - and yes they did. So this is definately the new firmware on the mouse.

    Anyway I’m just checking it out on my PC as I was gaming a bit in Vista anyway. The driver installed without issues and recognizes the Xai as FW 1.4.2 and I can also change the settings.

    I haven’t checked it out myself on the laptop I initially installed the driver and firmware, but I believe that it should work if you reinstall the driver after flashing the firmware.

    @Hmmmm

    can you use the display of the mouse to load the defaults and reinstall the software? If the problem still persists, let me know.

    To see the firmware version the mouse is running, just after plugging it in it’s shown on the mouses display for a few seconds before the SteelSeries logo fades in.

    Also it would be great to know from which version you upgraded that gave you the Update error.

    @anonyMouse

    which version did you upgrade from when you got the error?

    “can you use the display of the mouse to load the defaults and reinstall the software? If the problem still persists, let me know.”

    that was my first instinct, it didnt solve the problem.

    “To see the firmware version the mouse is running, just after plugging it in it’s shown on the mouses display for a few seconds before the SteelSeries logo fades in.”

    it shows 1.4.2

    “Also it would be great to know from which version you upgraded that gave you the Update error.”

    1.3.6

    using the previous version of the mouse program is the only thing that seems to help. So i got FW 1.4.2 and SW 1.3.6

    I cannot tell exactly anymore which firmware I had installed before. I think it was 1.3.6.

    Interestingly enough I just booted my laptop from where I initially installed 1.4.2 and quess what: it’s working now.
    So the only thing I did after updating the firmware and drivers on my laptop (and getting the errors), was to reset to default settings and install the drivers on another PC and plug in the mouse. After that it also worked on my laptop… weird.

    Maybe someone could try to install the drivers on a second PC, plug in the mouse and then back to the PC you originally installed the drivers and firmware.

    Oh and yeah: I don’t get it myself why this works after all.

    Hi guys
    I’m here again :P
    I’ve installed the new software few days ago
    So far I didn’t encounter any problems
    I’m just confused about something
    Why I can only assign the first 8 macros I’ve made and those left on I can’t assign them
    You guys know what I mean ?
    Maybe I can take a screenshot later on
    And also another problem when I first time open the new 1.4.2 software
    it detected my Xai mouse
    And then it says need to download the latest firmware and etc things
    Suddenly
    It says the firmware update can’t be complete
    Erm..
    Unfortunately I forgot the reason =.=
    But my mouse still working properly
    After that the windows says the hardware is not properly installed
    It requested to restart my pc
    I did it
    After the pc restart
    I try to do the firmware update again
    it works and everything’s fine
    Thanks to the steelseries team and everything
    You guys are really better than some other manufacturers in my opinion XD
    Wish that my macros assigning problem above can be answered by someone

    Regards

    what exactly does this new firmware update offer besides the macro options?

    After upgrading to the 1.4.2 firmware and software (going through the same freezing/reboot problem that others have had) my ExactRate setting is still varying wildly at values nowhere near what I have it set to.

    Set to 750hz: http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/1871/mouserate.gif

    I’m still getting massive positive acceleration too, using 6/11 Windows sensitivity. I’m talking up to 20% extra rotation across my pad when I move it at a fast speed that I could reasonably use in game.

    Also still getting random errors in tracking, my cursor continues to move randomly around the screen when my mouse is lifted well above the pad.

    Any updates on problems like this, which I know just about everyone else is having?

    Hello!
    I changed from 1.3.6 to 1.4.2 (Firmware & Software). I usually use 400cpi 6/11 and with the new firmware it’s a lot faster than before. Although I load my profile which I used in the past the sensitivity is a lot faster. I noticed if I change to 1600cpi 3/11 and click to apply and right after that change back to my normal settings 400cpi 6/11 it works. But after a reboot my sensitivity is high again although my settings have been loaded.

    i have no problem with the fact, if a new mice on market has some problems, but it`s really annoying to see, how many people (!) write problem reports in forums because of the kinzu series. and now people a fucked up about the xai series.

    and who in gods name, had that idea with those idiotic mousefeets !?!? it`s horrible on cloth pads !!

    how can pro teams like fnatic, SK, MYM etc could play with those at tournaments ??!?!

    Interesting that there is no official response here, as well as tickets opened on SteelSeries own support website. I feel a bit disappointed with the “service” considering the premium price that Xai commanded.

    I noticed what might a bug on the 1.4.2 software as well. Windows mouse settings at 6/11. When sensitivity is adjusted and “applied” using the Xai software, Windows control panel mouse settings will jump to 11/11. This happens every single time when sensitivity changes are made via the software.

    I noticed that after Xai software has been “installed”, you can copy the exe and dll file into a thumb drive and use it on other computers. yeah you can adjust cpi on mouse but scrolling for 100-200 cpi can be a real pain using the mouse’s stiff scroll wheel.

    You can fully configure the mouse with a copy of the application on another machine. I believe “installation” is not required. If Steelseries is serious about making this mice truly portable and “driverless”, the configuration application should be made available for download and use.

    Installation is a Microsoft disease and totally unnecessary “follow the crowd” thingy.

    Hey guys!
    Since I update from 1.3.6 to 1.4.2 my Xai sometimes starts to skip. It’s just for about 10 seconds but it’s annoying. Sometimes I have the problem that the mouse won’t react for 2-3 seconds. The mouse pointer just jitters and there is no constant move of it. As I said just a few seconds later is works again. Would be glad if you can help. If the Xai works it’s the best mouse I’ve ever had. (had a LOT :P) regards guys

    I guess I’ve won the grand prize then. Just bought the mouse and it worked just fine until I downloaded the software and it started to upgrade the firmware to 1.4.2, when it has finished I got the same error as you guys did. But my mouse is pretty much a fucking brick now, all that works is the buttons and not the tracking at all. The only time the tracking response is when I put my fingers in front of the laser about 2-3 cm away from the laser..

    Now isn’t that just great for an expensive mouse? Exactly what I could have expected for the value of my money.

    Lucky ones that got the chance to get XAI. Steelseries is out of stock, no re-stock date, won’t answer support mails, plus all ‘resellers’ around only have 2 mice and a couple of mousepads and they think they are reselling. Plus no other site ships in here and I don’t wanna get it through ebay.

    Snap,

    Installed latest firmware (1.4.2) and my Xai is now bricked - max sensitivity and mouse buttons no longer work - also crashes XP/Vista (tried on 2 different PC’s) - is a new driver/firmware update likely to fix this?

    If Xai is working its the best mouse I’ve ever had. I had following mice.
    Intelli 1.1,Intelli 3.0,Razer Salmosa, Razer Krait, Razer Deathadder, Razer Copperhead, Raptor M2, Logitech G5, Logitech MX 518, Steelseries Kinzu, Steelseries Xai.

    My Review: I really like the shape of the Xai. It feels more comfortable than my previous mouse Intelli 1.1. Especially the surface is much better. I haven’t had any problems with the previous driver 1.3.6. Everything was perfect. It comes with an warranty of 36 month which explains the “high” purchase price. I would recommand it everyone.

    You should be fine with the original firmware (worked fine for me anyway - but no macros - not the end of the world?) - just make sure you plug dirctly into a USB port (and not a hub) as the Xai appears to be a high drain device…

    Good luck when it arrives!

    Hey all.

    Just wanted to say after attempting the 1.4.2 firmware update my Xai is TRULY bricked. The update froze at the very end, I left it for 15 minutes in hope that it would finish, knowing that an uncompleted firmware update can cause a bricked mouse.

    Restarting PC didn’t help, nor did trying other USB slots. Mouse is completely dead, has no power, doesn’t get detected by software when I plug it in or start PC with it already plugged in.

    Anyone else have this problem?
    Will Steelseries send me a replacement or refund if I open a support ticket?

    P.S. I had all of the same sensor issues that other people have reported. Dissapointing to say the least, I just hope my £70!!! purchase is not all for nothing.

    Yes. The exact same thing happened to the Xai I was sent.
    It is unrecognizeable by the computer.
    On Windows 7, Vista32, and XP there is no response whatsoever.
    Unless there’s a hardware reset accessible to consumers (I doubt it), you’re going to need to
    send it back, but I don’t know how long that’ll take.

    I had the same problem as most of you. Updated the firmware to 1.4.2, the computer froze after the update, and the mouse failed to respond after that, despite rebooting many times.

    I finally fixed it by doing a system restore back to a time before I installed the drivers, and now it works fine, even after I reinstall the drivers.

    It seems that the after the firmware update, something funky happens to the mouse and Windows can’t load the correct drivers for it (it shows up as a question mark under unknown devices in the Device Manager), and you need to completely remove them (not just uninstall the program, since that keeps the drivers on the computer) in order to get it working again.

    That’s when I lift the mouse and I replace at the same place.
    I’ve try the ozone smog with same sensor and no problem. The lift distance is smaller and tweakable by one button on the mouse !

    I just purchased this mouse, while it performs well one of the main functions doesn’t work, changing profiles via LCD. Every time I do that, the DPI changes to either 3200 or 5001. The only way for the profiles to change back is to unplug the mouse. It is a good thing this mouse cost $90 only for one of the major features to not work. SteelSeries, you really need to work on quality control. The Ikari was awful and plagued with issues when it came out, the Kinzu is awful and still isn’t fixed, and now my Xai has issues… This is becoming ridiculous.

    I have had my Xai mouse for couple days now.
    At first i got the same Firmware update error than most of you did.

    But my mouse did not turn into a brick and it seems to work very well.

    Other problems are, when changing profiles, the mouse cpi chages to very high value.
    Only way make it go normal, is to use the Xai configuration program and load your normal settings.

    I don’t even need more than one profile in my mouse anyway.

    Overall, this is one of the best mouse i have ever used. My previous one was Sidewinder X8. Good mouse, but nothing compared to this one.

    ^+1 I too experienced the same issue with the firmware update, though it seemed to work 100% after. No skipping on my qck mouse pad.

    And I have to agree with you Tonde, coming from the; Diamondback, G5, DA and Sidewinder this one blows them all away. The shape and feel of the mouse is just perfect for my medium sized hands.

    Oh yeah, discovered a bug where if you try to assign a macro to a button that already has a macro in use, it will simply crash the software’s UI. To work around this; disable the button, apply the settings then put the one you want in there. There’s another stupid bug when you create a macro and it just doesn’t appear on the button assignment tab/s. You have to close the program and reopen it.

    Sort it out Steel Series :/ Paid good money for for this shit.

    I found a fix for the profile changing problem. You can’t have the CPI set to the same amount on the profiles. You have to have it set different so you can toggle it when you switch profiles.

    Example: Profile 1 has 400/800CPI. When I switch to Profile 1, it has a high DPI, but when I toggle the DPI button, it goes right back to 800/400. Still a dumb bug that should never have surfaced, but this is SteelSeries we are talking about, not Jengo Fett.

    Isnt it uncomfortable with side-buttons on both sides? Especially when palm grippin it.

    On the MS IMO 1.1 the side-buttons(one on each side) are “one” with the mouse. You cant feel them with your ring finger or pinky.

    The buttons on the xai on the other hand seem to stick out?
    Can someone enlighten me?

    yes k it`s right. the xai is not really a good mouse for palm grip. my ringfinger touching them and you feel them anytime, but that`s not dramatic. you have to deal with it.

    but it`s great for claw grip. for palmgrip the shape of the xai is ok, but has no chance against the ikari :)

    best palmgrip mouse in the world is still the ms intelli 3.0, then intelli 1.1. but ikari is also great for palmgrip :)

    @jusuf: could you try it on a different pc?

    @k & ric: For me it was a bit uncomfortable in the beginning too, but it was because of the style I was used to hold mice.
    I normally place my thumb on the left side, my index finger on the left mouse button, middle finger on the right mouse button and both the ring and little finger on the ride side of the mouse.

    Well that works fine with most mice I have used so far, but it does not with the Xai. The first thing that appeared weird to me, was that my index finger rested next to the mouse wheel and it required some force to bend my finger to the left to be placed on the middle of the button. That’s certainly not a nice feeling even after very few minutes of usage.
    After some time it also gets tiresome for the ring finger, because it is bent outwards.

    The next downside of this holding style (besides of the comfort issues described above), is that the mouse doesn’t rest straight in your hand but is rotated to the left for about 10 degrees (if you are right-handed). This means that if you move your hand in a straight line from right to left, the pointer won’t also move on a horizontal line but make a slope and that’s bad. Just try to rotate the mouse even more in your hand (45 degrees) to see what I’m trying to say.

    So the right way of holding the Xai (in my opinion) is to put the ring finger next to your middle finger ON the right mouse button. By doing that the Xai stays stright in your hand and this automatically eliminates the problem with the index finger being to near to the wheel. This way you also don’t have to bend your ring finger in an awkward position (for the Xai at least) and it also won’t rest on the right side buttons.

    I have the newest firmware. My sensitivity is changing on it’s own while playing. It seems the sensor is very very sensitive to any kind of little dust particles. Cleaning the lens with air helps a little… yeah, maybe ten minutes and the problem is back. It’s almost like somebody is decreasing my sensitivity “on the fly” during 10-15min gameplay. I have a high quality cloth pad with clean surface.

    This is unbelievable… this is the only mouse i’ve ever had with this kind of problems. I love the shape and accuracy, but unstable sens ruins it all.

    Back to mx518 for now… :(

    Hello,

    I still can’t believe we don’t have new firmwares / softwares to replace the buggy ones.

    First, it was a nightmare to create macros & select them for my buttons : the sofware was continually crashing and did not want to save my preferences.

    Next, why do we have to create a macro to select a letter on my keyboard?!? Macros are an imperfect solution to select the key: you can not “emulate” a key on the keyboard so that your character in a game is running or crouching constantly.
    If someone know how to fix the problem, please tell me.

    Yeah they really need to fix the software. First off, give us the ability to assign key binds on the buttons. Instead of the buggy macro system. Awesome hardware let down by buggy and poorly written drivers, shame. Though I am enjoying using mine, its VERY frustrating making macros for new games.

    Give us KEY BINDS! Surely can’t be too hard to program considering most gaming mice have this function.

    Well, I thought this driver download was a successful one, no problems at all except when changing some options through the LCD the DPI auto gets higher and you have to duoble click at the “DPI-Switch” button to fix it and secondly the DPI changes some time for none reasons..

    I have no idea why SteelSeries is delaying the release of firmware and software updates for their current line of mice. Both the Kinzu and Xai were so hyped, and just like the Ikari they failed in the beginning. SteelSeries has always had bad quality control in the beginning.

    yup … i guess almost all of us are waiting for updated configuration software. I created an account and I sent in a tech request to SS about 3 weeks ago and haven’t heard back from them either. The first couple times using the software to configure my Xai worked like a charm. then i wanted to change macros on the right buttons. When i went to assign, the UI/Software crashes and have to task manager close it. Reinstalled, etc, etc… same issue. Tere is something deep in there and maybe it’s confusing SS to? … argh … waiting … at least my mouse mostly works.

    I just RMA’d my Xai after 25 days of talking with customer support. Steelseries really needs to get their support section together. 25 days to resolve a technical issue is absolutely rediculous.

    Another problem I had with my Xai was my polling rate was jumping to 4000+. I know that can be extremely bad for my motherboard. Thank god I didn’t fry it.

    1. PC now needs 45 seconds longer to boot (or to say it better - it hangs for 45 seconds before the boot process is starting). That’s unacceptable. Doesn’t happen with the Ikari Laser Mouse. USB Legacy disabled/enabled makes no difference.

    1. PC now needs 45 seconds longer to boot (or to say it better - it hangs for 45 seconds before the boot process is starting).

    The black screen before the Windows logo comes up? I wondered what was causing that since I’d never had it up until a few months ago.

  109. Maik

    109

    Yep, it’s a black sreen here.

    The BIOS somewhat hangs for 45 seconds before beginning the boot procedure at all. So I even have to wait 45 seconds to get into the BIOS setup. Windows is loading after that 45 seconds delay. So any Windows tweaks can’t help here. The mouse hardware is somewhat confusing the BIOS initialization.

    It looks like this:

    -> shutdown PC
    -> power up PC
    -> 45 seconds hang
    -> BIOS initialization (Board boot procedure) gets started
    -> Windows gets loaded

    Ikari mouse didn’t give me that! There it looks like this:

    -> shutdown PC
    -> power up PC
    -> BIOS initialization (Board boot procedure) gets started
    -> Windows gets loaded

    Well even after reading this blog I ended up buying a Xai, and quess what? I’ve experienced every problem listed here. Inconsistent USB polling rate with random spikes up to 1000-9000Hz.
    The mouse changes CPI on its own and it does it very frequently when it starts doing so.
    Sometimes the mouse cursor (or crosshair when gaming) drags “behind” when you move the mouse.
    The sensor also “shuts down” occasionally, meaning the mouse doesnt track at all or skips like hell.
    I believe all of these to be programming errors since theyre very random and fix themselves after a short while and thus should be fixable.

    PS.
    Steelseries, you really should get a better embedded software team, this firmware (1.4.2) is just buggy as hell.

    I’ve been happy with mine. It does have minor acceleration which you can find if you look at the graphs floating around on some of the review sites. The only time mine has not tracked perfectly the lens was dirty. Once I cleaned the lens things went back to normal (meaning good). The only time i have problems with sensor is after i restart and possible logoff/on.

    All I have to do is cycle through the dpi settings with the dpi button above the scroll wheel a few times to reload the configs in the mouses memory. Then my sensitivity/sensor issues are fixed and my aim is amazing.

    Another thing I do is I cycle through my dpi with the mouse off the mousepad for a little bit then put it on the mousepad and cycle one more time so that way the sensor re-adjusts to the surface. Try it out let me know what you guys think.
